image Wightlink ro-ro ferry St. Faith landed heavily on fendering at Portsmouth after attempts to correct a higher than normal speed of approach to the berth left insufficient ahead power being available, says the MAIB’s preliminary report.

At 1412 BST on 28 March 2010, the ro-ro passenger ferry, St Faith, landed heavily against fendering while attempting to berth at the Camber Basin linkspan in Portsmouth. Two persons suffered minor injuries and the vessel’s stern ramp was damaged.

A distracted, overloaded master, under-utilisation of the OOW, inadequate position monitoring and the loss of the diesel alternator supplying the vessel’s bow thruster at a critical moment led to the ro-ro cargo ferry Celtic Star hitting a light float on the River Mersey. The lessons are so familiar that the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch has limited itself to a preliminary investigation.

Says the report: “At 2211 on 1 February 2010, the ro-ro cargo ferry Celtic Star hit the C22 light float while navigating the River Mersey, towards Liverpool. In accordance with usual practice, the vessel had reduced speed and manoeuvred to the eastern side of the river in preparation for her entry into Gladstone Lock. The tidal stream in the river was flooding at about 3.5 knots and the wind was westerly at 20 knots.
