Grinding machines and abrasive wheels should always be used in accordance with the manufacturers instructions, lesson learned from a fatality in a safety alert from Step Change in Safety.

A welder carrying out maintenance was using a hand-held angle grinder to prepare surfaces in preparation for welding. The grinding wheel shattered penetrating the worker’s abdomen and chest, injuries he died from later in the day.

Says the alert: “Always ensure the guard is correctly fitted to the grinder.
DO NOT use grinding wheels that are larger than the recommended size.
Always check and only use grinding wheels of a correct and compatible speed rating.
Store abrasive wheels correctly and visually check them for deformities prior to use.
