Pirates who seized the Ukrainian cargo carrier Faina with 33 Russian tanks on board have been reported to be leaving the vessel in small groups following payment of an alleged $3.2m, the largest single payout so far.
It is understood that a US naval vessel is standing by to provide food, fresh water and medical treatment once the last of the 80 pirates aboard have left. Shortage of food and water have been reported 0over the past few weeks.
Faina was among the highest profile piracy incidents, attracting immediate attention because of the weapons and munitions on board destined for Kenya. Suspicions were aroused that the tanks may have ultimately been bound for the Sudan.
