Chile: Don’t Touch Your Bottom
FelÂlow BloÂgista DenÂnis Bryant warns: “There are unofÂfiÂcial reports that the 8.8 magÂniÂtude earthÂquake that struck Chile last month has moved parts of the nation. The city of ConÂcepÂtion may have moved as much as ten feet to the west, while SanÂtiÂago may have moved eleven inches to the west-southwest. Even areas outÂside Chile, includÂing the FalkÂland Islands and Brazil, may have been affected. As yet, there are no reports of eleÂvaÂtion changes, but mariners navÂiÂgatÂing waters in and around Chile should exerÂcise cauÂtion until definÂiÂtive new surÂveys are done. The 1964 earthÂquake in Alaska caused sigÂnifÂiÂcant eleÂvaÂtion changes, parÂticÂuÂlarly at Kodiak Island, and resulted in a numÂber of groundÂings until charts could be updated.”
It’s worth rememÂberÂing that earthÂquake can, and do, change seabed proÂfiles sigÂnifÂiÂcantly enough to invalÂiÂdate chart data. This will hapÂpen more often in geoÂlogÂiÂcally unstaÂble areas such as on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
