Britain’s Maritime Accident Investigation Branch is looking for a technical officer to be based in Southampton.

£27,563 – £31,694 and on call allowance payable: Southampton

Crucial to the work of our Inspectors, you will be responsible for providing them with technical support to ensure that best use is made of all the available evidence including that from Voyage Data Recorders. Reporting to the Technical Manager and sharing on call duties with him, you will be providing remote and/or onsite technical assistance covering all aspects of evidence recovery. You will provide expert technical advice to technical representatives of overseas investigating authorities to help with the recovery and analysis of data evidence. Analysing recovered data for our Inspectors and advising on analysis possibilities and limitations you will be helping the MAIB further develop its data recovery and analysis capabilities.

Working in confined spaces on ships in situ, and accessing vessels using pilot ladders, you need an acceptable level of fitness to fulfil this important role. You will have practical experience of operating or maintaining marine electronics equipment and good technical competence in PC-based data storage and handling techniques. With proven ability in the analysis of complex data you will need excellent communication, people management and project management skills for this critical role.
