Warning over offshore gas leaks

Figures released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found there had been no improvement in the number of hydrocarbon releases in the oil and gas industry in 2007/08 compared with the previous year.

The HSE found 571 “dangerous incidents” were reported on offshore platforms over the last 12 months – 32 more than during 2006/07. Of these incidents, 40% were hydrocarbon releases.

The statistics also revealed an increase in the number of major injuries in the offshore sector in 2007/08 compared with the previous year, from 39 to 44.
